Terms of Service

What using Notefile means, in plain terms — for you and for us.

Effective 8 August 2026

Acceptance of terms

By installing or using the Notefile browser extension, you agree to be bound by these terms. If you don't agree with them, please don't use Notefile.

What Notefile is

Notefile is a Chrome, Edge and Brave extension that provides:

  • A side-panel notepad, saving each note as a real file — .txt, .docx, or legacy .md — in a folder you choose on your own computer
  • "Capture area as text" — on-device optical character recognition of a screen region you select
  • A 30-day free trial, and a paid yearly license for continued use

There is no cloud storage, no analytics, and no account system beyond the trial/license identifiers described in the Privacy Policy.

No user accounts

Notefile has no account system for the notepad itself — no profile, no password, no sign-in. What you're responsible for instead:

  • Your license key — keep it to yourself. Sharing it beyond the devices it's licensed for is a violation of these terms (see Acceptable use below).
  • The trial email you verify — providing an address you actually control, since that's how a one-time code reaches you.
  • Your notes folder — Notefile writes to whatever folder you point it at; choosing and backing up that folder is on you.

License, trial and billing

  • The 30-day free trial unlocks every feature. It requires only an email address, verified with a one-time code — no card is collected.
  • A license is a one-time yearly purchase, not a subscription. It does not auto-renew. When it expires, nothing is charged automatically — you simply need to buy another license to keep using Notefile.
  • Payments are processed by Payhip, acting as merchant of record. Notefile never receives or stores your payment details.
  • A license covers up to 3 devices at a time; the oldest inactive device is retired automatically if you activate a 4th.
  • All sales are final — see the Refund Policy for the full policy and the rare exceptions to it.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use Notefile for any unlawful purpose
  • Attempt to gain unauthorized access to the licensing server or its data
  • Interfere with or disrupt the licensing service (for example, automated requests designed to exhaust trial or verification limits)
  • Reverse engineer, decompile, or copy the extension's code beyond what browser platforms permit for installed extensions
  • Share a license key with people or devices beyond the 3-device limit it was purchased for

Your notes remain yours

Notefile never stores your note content — it lives only in the folder on your computer that you chose. This means:

  • We cannot access, recover, back up, or delete your notes on your behalf, because we never had a copy
  • Uninstalling Notefile, letting a license lapse, or account/licensing issues on our end never touch the files already written to your folder
  • You are responsible for your own backups — the same as any other application that saves files to your disk

Limitation of liability

Notefile is provided "as is," without warranty of any kind, express or implied. To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for damages arising from your use of, or inability to use, the extension — including lost data, missed notes, or business interruption. Because notes are stored only on your own device, our practical exposure to data-loss claims is inherently limited: we never hold a copy to lose. Our total liability for any claim is capped at the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose.

Termination

We may revoke a license or block a trial for violation of these terms — most realistically, license-key sharing beyond the device limit, or abuse of the trial/verification system. If that happens, the extension stops unlocking; it does not delete, modify, or gain access to your notes, which remain exactly where they were on your disk.

You may stop using Notefile at any time by uninstalling it. Your notes are unaffected.

Changes to these terms

If these terms change, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Continuing to use Notefile after a change means you accept the update.

Governing law

These terms don't override any consumer protection right you have under mandatory law in your country that can't be waived by agreement — where such a right applies, it takes precedence over anything here that conflicts with it.
